Pilgrimage of the Sun Guard (by Amanda P.) is a short, solo-journaling RPG where you play as a knight who goes on a pilgrimage to bring glory back to his order. I kept getting a weird vibe off of it; for better or worse, it's very much an OSR-flavored game. I had a fairly short playthrough, about most of an afternoon, with most of my time taken up by writing up responses to the game's prompts. Character creation is simple, and I was able to write mine up on a small index card. For a solo journaling game, the prompts were very structured; it might work best as a beginner's introduction to the genre, as it was for me, but it also seems like you'd eventually end up repeating yourself on replays.

Without further ado, here's the actual play )

I don't usually go for anime of the "cute girls doing cute things" genre, but I was feeling sick a few weeks ago and needed something calming watch while I rested up, so I put on Laid-Back Camp (or Yuru Camp, if you're a stickler for Japanese titles). And... I loved it! It's cute, funny, very relaxing, and despite the cute girls involved visiting the hot springs every other episode, there's hardly any fanservice at all. It's the perfect show to watch while working out or even just laying back and snacking. It's even gotten me to consider trying camping again, although it's unlikely that I'll actually, uh, do it. Very recommended.

Recently, due to some circumstances I'd rather not get into right now, I've been getting into the classic mystery series Columbo. I just finished the the 6th episode, Suitable for Framing, about an asshole art critic who offs his uncle for his inheritance. They're pretty good, of course! Some episodes are better than others, but all of them so far have been a cracking good time. I'm especially fond of the way Columbo is always staring up at the perps with a slouch, like he's the David to their Goliath.

If I had to name a favorite episode, it'd probably be Murder by the Book, the one directed by Steven Spielberg, but the episode I find most interesting is actually the first one, Prescription: Murder. For one, Columbo is a much different character than he is in the rest of the series; sure, he still has his fumbling nature and his easy-going amiability is there, to a certain extent, but he's definitely a lot more raw, a lot more... ruthless, for lack of a better term. There's even a scene where he screams at a woman. Anyway, I do think it's a good thing that they softened the character later on, but I do wish we could have seen how that particular version of the character would have developed if they kept him more of a hardass. Maybe not as a hero, but a villain, even.

Ryan Veeder, an IF author whom you may know as the guy behind Taco Fiction, The Statue Got Me High, and Cragne Manor, among others, helps host a trivia night for a local charity each year, and last Sunday, he invited some friends of his, including me, to test it. It was a fun night, with plenty of the Veeder-esque humor that is his trademark among the IF community, and a good time was had by all, etc., etc. HOWEVER, the thing that interested most that evening was one particular trivia segment, in which both teams had to answer a set of questions based on limited information. More details under the cut!

Flickgame, in case you haven't heard of it, is a game creation tool by increpare. It allows you to create simple point-and-click games, which you can then share with your friends. I was thinking of offering one for this year's [community profile] fandomtrumpshate, so here's a small portfolio of what I've done:

Today I had the privilege to witness two separate blowups about Marie Kondo in my regular online hangouts. (Marie Kondo, if you didn't already know, is the decluttering guru who goes around people's houses and asks them "Does this bring you joy?" Or, well, something like that; I've never actually read her books.) Apparently, the main point of contention was her advice about books, in which she advises readers to cut down on their collections quite heavily, claiming she has only 30 books in her home herself. This struck folks as just too few books, I guess.

Anyway, inspired by this, I decided to take a look at my own bookshelves, and see what I could bear to throw out. I kept asking myself, "Would I really miss this if it was gone?" It turns out at least 15 books didn't make the cut, so I'm dropping them off at the local library after work tomorrow. And, thanks to my decluttering, a bunch of books I do actually like can now fit on my bookshelves! Thanks, Marie Kondo!

Hi, I'm HealyG, or Healy on AO3, and here is my Dear Author Letter for Chocolate Box 2019.

Gen Likes: Comedy, mysteries, heartwarming junk, humor based on people acting like jerks (hey! I can like two things), wordplay/puns, weird junk, character studies, show-within-a-show stuff, humor about someone who blithely misunderstands the obvious, characters revealing a surprising side of themselves, family fluff.

Shippy likes: UST, pining, rival shipping, relationships that end badly/tragically, relationships that turn out to work surprisingly well, one-sided relationships, "bromances" that turn into something more, affectionate touching, plotty shipfic.

Art Likes: Clean lines, bright colors (if there are any colors), cartoony faces, comics of any kind (from 4 panel gag strips to more action-oriented stuff), hidden jokes.

DNW: Rape/noncon, incest, underage sex, graphic violence, explicit sexual content.

Fandom specific prompts under the cut!

So, just so I don't leave things off on my blog with a dumb shitpost, here's a list of things I plan to get around to this week:

  • uploading most of my art that was on Tumblr on Deviantart
  • finishing up multiple Secret Santa projects
  • making a Neocities page for myself
  • rewatching this old crappy video series, and determine if I want to do a write-up on it
  • write a few fills for [community profile] fail_fandomanon's prompt and fill fest
  • rewrite an old fic I submitted to someone else's tumblr, and post it on AO3
  • finish writing this filk about an old fandom wank

Naturally, I don't expect I'll finish all of these by the end of the week. But I hope to get around to at least some of them.

Not using tumblr at all.

Ever.

(And before you ask, no, I plan to keep on using my tumblr, mainly because I'm a glutton for punishment. I'll just need a week... or two... to get back into it. Queued posts at [tumblr.com profile] healy-dealy have been reduced to reflect this.)

So chances are if you haven't been living under a rock for the past two weeks you've heard about Tumblr's recent decision to ban all NSFW content on their site. (Visual content, mainly, but who's to say if that won't change.) Naturally, this has caused a massive upheaval among Tumblr's userbase, since for many people Tumblr's primary purpose was for, you know, porn.

It'd be an understatement to say that the news that I was stressed out when I first heard the news. "Sent into a blind panic" might be a more accurate way to state it. I anxiously checked the news from my phone during my bathroom breaks. I felt a palpable sense of relief when I came home from work and saw that my NSFW tumblr hadn't been deleted. And of course, I rushed to save all of my favorite NSFW fanworks, even figured out how to run a (complicated at first glance, but easy enough once you get the hang of it) Python program to back up (mostly other people's, I'll admit) tumblrs.

Now, after about two weeks since the news dropped, I've calmed down a bit. I have a bunch of smutty artwork saved in separate folders, categorized by pairing. I've got about 200 gigabytes worth of blogs saved on my hard drive, thanks to the Python method. I've got enough time to backup more if I need it, even though it's just for the weekend. I'm backing up my own blog as we speak. And now, after the dust has cleared a bit, I'm feeling... blah, I guess. It's the end of an era, and I hate seeing it go. It was nice, having all that fanart and fic saved to your blog. I don't think we'll ever see its like again, even though Pillowfort's making a good go at it.

Everybody's scrambling for other social media sites at this point, even the folks who plan on staying on Tumblr. And me? Well, I'm staying there as long as they'll let me. There's a big GF fandom event next month, so I'll probably stick around at least 'til then. It's not like I was posting any porn myself, so if my understanding of what happens on the 17th is correct, I should be okay? But we'll see what happens when it happens.

In the meantime, I'll probably post here a bit more, maybe? We'll see how this all shakes out.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Day 5
Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

The challenge for the fifth day is to recommend some kind of fannish or creative resource, so I thought I'd rec some of the material sites I use for my RPG Maker projects! All of these are free to use so long as you credit the original creators in your game.

White Screw Shop: A good resource for tilesets, character set, and other graphical resources. Formatted for RM2K/2K3.

Maou Damashii: Good for music and sound effects. Music comes in midi, MP3, and .ogg formats.

Freedom House 2nd: One of the finest collections of RPG music ever composed. A lot of their tracks got used in the Japanese indie roguelike hit One Way Heroics. (Midi only.)

Fandom Snowflake Challenge 2018: Day 1
Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

Day 1's Challenge is to talk about why we're participating. So! I'm participating because, honestly, I need to do some more blogging around here, and this is a good, low effort way to get back into that. I'm also looking forward to some of the upcoming challenges, like the self-reccing one; if there's one thing I like to talk about, it's the things that I've done and why I did them, and there are a couple things I did last year and the year before that which I'm pretty proud of.

Sorry for not posting much lately. I've been feeling pretty bent out of shape over some forum drama that I'd rather not talk about right now. Let's just say it concerns some seriously upsetting shit, and it's really fucking with my head. I may have to stop going there for a while, or even altogether, even though most (all?) of the perps have gotten banned already.

Anyway, I've been biding my time by playing cutesy RPG Maker games, which have been helpful in taking my mind off things. I may talk about them in depth later this week, but in case I don't, know that At the Tale End is really, really good.
