There's a feel, an aura to them that you don't get anywhere else. It's where directors like Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg cut their teeth doing their earliest work, to some their most important work. And of course it was the time of the great police and crime movies (Dirty Harry, Serpico, The Outfit, Duel, just to name a few). I wouldn't say movies will never reach those heights again, but it'll probably be a while before we get another epoch like that.
Besides those films I mentioned, I'm also a big fan of Miyazaki's The Castle of Cagliostro (1980).
